Valerie Marie and Neurosurgery
Can you give us a brief introduction?
My name is Valerie Marie. I am a student at Loreto College Rose Hill, and I am in Grade 13 Science Side.
Which Career would you like to pursue?
I want to become a Neurosurgeon.
Why a Neurosurgeon?
From a very young age, I have enjoyed watching movies or shows which portray the life of medical personnel in hospitals. The TV Show “Les Experts”, is one of my personal favorites, and has significantly influenced me to choose the science side for my studies.
Now, I have been inspired to become a Neurosurgeon by my father’s friend, who is one himself. I have always enjoyed the stories that he has to tell us.
Have you done your research on the steps to follow?
I have made some research and found that unfortunately there are no courses in Neurosurgery in Mauritius. As such, I would like to pursue my studies in the United States of America, which has always been a dream of mine, before coming back to work in Mauritius.
Why is it important for you to come back to work in Mauritius?
I want to contribute to the medical field in my country. Like many before me, I also want to be an example for other young Mauritian ladies who want to have a career in medicine in Mauritius.
Has the JA Career Success program helped you in your preparation to fulfill your dream?
Yes, definitely. It has helped me in understanding the little things that make a significant difference in a career. One of my biggest weakness is how I deal with stress. A lot of people deal with their stress by taking it out on other people. JA Career Success has helped me understand how this negatively impact on the performance of a team and on an individual’s ability to do his/her job.
